Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles Reveal They Want Sam and Dean to Die at the End of ‘Supernatural’

Saving people and hunting things will forever be the family business for the Winchester brothers, but is that really a satisfying existence?

Things got morbid real fast during the Season 12 finale of Supernatural — Crowley succumbed to a grim fate after finally redeeming himself; Lucifer killed Castiel (because he’s a murderer of love and laughter); Mary was trapped in another world with Lucifer; and the Nephilim was finally born. Yeah, that’s a whole lot of drama jam-packed into a series that has never backed down or opted out of going the extra mile.

Apart from giving fans many things to cry and get excited about, the Winchester brothers have also put their lives on the line time after time. What their ultimate fate will be has yet to be determined, but the stars of Supernatural certainly have a few ideas about how things should end.

During the show’s press room at Comic-Con 2017, both Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles revealed their ideal endings for Sam and Dean. Turns out, both actors have a very similar vision, and it most definitely ends in death!

“I really think Sam needs to die,” Padalecki stated bluntly. “I’ve felt for many years that the way Sam started was always as the reluctant one. Although he wasn’t dragged into it against his will, Sam has always had this internal struggle of not wanting to be there and then he resigned himself to accepting that this is his life. This is never going to change, and this is who he is. Sam has lost everybody, so I don’t think he would stop hunting unless he dies. I also think it would make for good TV, at the end of day.”

“I go back and forth about how I view the show coming to a close,” said Ackles. “Part of me thinks that it should be with the brothers finally dying and not having a way back, but I also feel like it would be nice to leave it open in case there’s a film down the road. That’s just the more business mind of me,” Ackles joked.

But what if one of the brothers died and the other had to carry on without him? That’s also a potential outcome that Ackles has often mulled over.

“Maybe the other brother tries it out and just can’t do it,” said Ackles when discussing the possible aftermath of one of the Winchester brothers dying. “Maybe he turns a totally different corner and kind of becomes something he never thought he would become. I kind of view it like the movie Where the Red Fern Grows. I think it’s going to be like that. When one brother goes, the other brother is not far behind.”

What do you think about Padalecki and Ackles’ revelation? Do you want Supernatural to end with both or one of the Winchester brothers dying? Hit the comments to dish and discuss all your unfiltered feelings.

  1. Since the latest season has shifted to the spiritual realm and after life....they should end it there. After crossing over from Earth to Afterlife several times, the door closes on the bad guys and Sam and Dean accompany Castiel's spirit to heaven! They all end up in heaven and Chuck congratulates them for a job well done in ridding the earth of evil. (with God's help of course). It would be awesome to see all those who died in vain in past shows, those who they saved and those they lost...to be re united in heaven and all have one big happy party and celebration in the spiritual realm!

    1. Kind of like Star Wars was after certain ones had passed on and came back as spirits to assist and help out.....Supernatural should end in the Spiritual Realm.

  2. Then what happens to their mom? Or the child to protect?? Why not end the show with they succeeded in protecting everyone and the child they raise can have a safe normal life. Even go to school and have a family of his own

  3. They find a way to (finally!) kill Lucifer...but it will cost the killer his own life. Dean does it, and Sam gets caught in the 'flash' trying to stop him a split-second too late. Dean's last gasp is a raspy, "Sammy...", and Sam's is "S...sorry." a couple seconds later. Slowly pan to Chuck, despondent as he looks down at them, and tells their souls, "Come on home, boys."

  5. I would prefer them to retire and become mentors to new hunters and give them safe house at MOL etc...but i would settle for them both dying together and then us having a glimpse at them in heaven together sitting in impala and just driving. 1 of them dying is NOT an option.

  6. I have always thought it should end with them dying and going to heaven with the car and driving along and coming up on the bar that the girls had you know and everybody be in there and just having one big reunion party and their home but then they realize Chuck was killed by his sister and there is a way to save Chuck and they were waiting for the boys to get there so they could go do it and now they close scene with them having a whole new mission to do in heaven with all their friends the end
